The Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament was run with only 14 teams for the first time in my memory due to a late re-scheduled sectional tournament and several teams being unable to attend. The change in format created a rough weekend in which teams were split into pools of 7 with games to 13 and then had potentially 3 games to 15 in the elimination bracket. The most common comment at regionals this weekend was always something to the effect of how lopsided the two pools looked. Unfortunately, Potomac's poor showing at sectionals left them seeded 8th, which placed them in the same pool as Truck Stop and Pike. Thus the three teams that most thought would be fighting for that second spot had to first fight it out in pool B. First round of the day saw Pike playing
potomac in a very tight game that stayed even the whole way and finished with Potomac getting the narrow victory 13 to 11. Second round of the day saw Hi-Rates putting up a strong fight against Truckstop in which they seemed to come up with all the big plays while Truck seemed to be just a little bit flatter than usual. Just as it seemed that there might be a 4th team making a move in pool B, Truck pulled away in a close game to win 13-10. The Hi-Rates played Pike in the 3rd round and seemed to have the same fight as they did against Truckstop in the early few points. Pike pulled away late in the first half and the Hi-Rates seemed to loose their fire and never mounted much a push the rest of the tournament. Fourth round saw the second upset of the day as LOS beat Hi-Rates 11-9. Fifth round of the day saw Pike and Truck battle it out. The wind picked up some and so did the foul calls and arguing early in the game which slowed things down tremendously, which was becoming a serious issue as the rounds were very short due to the 11 rounds in two days that were required by the format. As the game that looked like it might barely get to the end of the first half before the cap the wind started to die down and so did the calls and arguing, but certainly not the intensity. Truck pulled out an 11-10 win in a cap shortened game. Day two left Pool B with two important games - Truck (2) vs. Potomac (4) for first place in the pool and a bye and Pike (1) vs. Los (5) for third place and an opportunity to simply advance. Los had quietly moved up into in the tourney and now actually had a chance to advance in a 1 vs. 5 game that is scheduled to be a relatively easy game. Impressive for Los, since they didn't even get a bid to the tournament until the Founders section was unable to fill three, yes three of their bids to regionals. Both games ended up being ant-climatic with Pike putting the game out of reach in the very first few points and Truck taking slightly longer to do the same with Potomac. Potomac seemed to concede the game after it started to get out of hand with their eyes now on the elimination bracket.

Pool B was decidedly less dramatic with Ring only being challenged against Medicine Men who took Ring to 9-8 when one of Med Men's players reportedly spiked a disc at a ring player which sparked at least some ugliness to occur. I did not see it personally, so I will not comment further, but I'm sure someone will on RSD. Med Men didn't score again and Ring still looked rather fired up well after the game was over. Only big upset was the Warriors beating Med Men in the very next round 13-10. This meant Med Men had to beat HOV in the final round of the day in order to create a three way tie for third place. Med Men won the game 13-9, but unfortunately for them they needed to win it 13-8 in order to advance on point differential. HOV moved into the 3rd spot despite losing by virtue of a +2 point diff to Med Men's +1. On Sundays pool play HOV had a chance to move into the second spot in a game against Burgh who had only lost to Ring. A very intense, well played game that was close the whole way, but Burgh pulled it out on universe point to win 14-13 and keep the 2nd spot in the pool.

First round of bracket play was much calmer than the last round of pool play as both Burgh and HOV looked a bit spent while Pike and Potomac looked hungry for a spot to nationals. Both games were put away early each giving up 7 and 5 points respectively. That set up perhaps the game of the weekend as Pike and Potomac battled it out for a spot in the "game to go". Very close, and extremely intense the whole game, but Potomac seemed to have a slight edge through most of the game until the end. Potomac seemed to run out of gas at the end of the game and Pike methodically worked the disc up the field to win on universe point 17-16. At the same time, Ring got it's best challenge of the weekend for at least the first half. A very close game, Ring took half 8-7. Truck, very much improved from last year with the addition of numerous experienced players, looked to still be a step short of the well established powerhouse of the region. For the many that say Ring has lost a step or two from previous years, I didn't see it this weekend. They looked very athletic and extremely talented. Ring took complete control in the second half and won 15-8. Truck probably never had a chance. Ring almost looked desperate for someone to challenge them this weekend as most teams essentially ducked them in Pool A (except for Med Men who may have payed the price in the next round) and saved themselves for the rest of the weekend. Truck gave them that fight, but Ring was well rested and more than ready for it. The game was probably over when Truckstop's D-Line was forced to call a time-out after getting a turnover in a long point about 2/3 of the way through the first half because they were exhausted. Every truck player looked like exhausted, while not a single Ring player looked even mildly tired. Truck kept fighting for a while, but thats when it was clear Ring was going to win the region. Maybe Truck would do better under even circumstances, but Ring still looked like the class of the region for another year.

The game to go pitted a re-match between Pike and Truck. One spectator commented that Pike looked like they were playing to not lose thier bid to nationals that they had earned over the last several years while truck was playing to earn the trip to nationals that many of them had never had at any level. In the end, Truck looked like the hungrier and more athletic team and pulled away by the second half. Pike never gave up the fight and even down 14-10, kept pushing and managed to score 3 straight to dramatically bring the score to 14-13 and the game within reach. Truckstops much improved O-Line worked it up the field much the way Pike did to Potomac in the previous game to finally put this one away 15-13.

Good luck to Ring and Truckstop at Nationals and thanks to all the volunteers who helped to set up fields and clean up!
